The Palau Ministry of Education receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to

  • Conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey.
  • Implement effective policies, programs, and practices to avoid, prevent, and reduce sexual risk behaviors among students that contribute to HIV infection, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and pregnancy.

HIV, STD, and Unintended Pregnancy Prevention

Palau is seeking to increase the percentage of schools that address all of the following in a required course taught during grades 6, 7, or 8:

  • The differences between HIV and AIDS.
  • How HIV and other STDs are transmitted.
  • How HIV and other STDs are diagnosed and treated.
  • Health consequences of HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
  • The benefits of being sexually abstinent.
  • How to prevent HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
  • How to access valid and reliable health information, products, and services related to HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
  • The influences of media, family, and social and cultural norms on sexual behavior.
  • Communication and negotiation skills related to eliminating or reducing risk for HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
  • Goal setting and decision making skills related to eliminating or reducing risk for HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
  • Compassion for persons living with HIV or AIDS.
Activities
  • Develop and implement professional development events that address HIV, STDs, and pregnancy prevention.
  • Integrate the HIV, STDs, and unintended pregnancy curriculum into the middle school health education curriculum framework.
  • Approve an HIV prevention policy for integrating HIV, STDs, and unintended pregnancy into the health education curriculum framework.
  • Provide middle school health education teachers professional development on Reducing the Risk: Building Skills to Prevent Pregnancy, HIV, and STD.

Palau is seeking to increase the percentage of schools that provide parents and families health information to increase parent and family knowledge of HIV prevention, STD prevention, and teen pregnancy prevention.

Activities
  • Develop a parent and teacher calendar at each school that identifies events related to educating parents and families about HIV, STDs, and pregnancy prevention efforts.
  • Provide workshops for parents and families related to HIV, STDs, and pregnancy prevention.
  • Promote dialogue between youth and families through monthly meetings at schools and community locations.

Palau is seeking to increase the percentage of schools in which students’ family or community members have helped develop or implement HIV prevention, STD prevention, or teen pregnancy prevention policies and programs.

Activities
  • Provide regular updates on HIV, STD, and unintended pregnancy prevention for agencies and community partners.
  • Engage public health professionals from respective communities to provide regular family HIV, STD, and pregnancy prevention education through parent and teacher meetings.
  • Include family representative on prevention program planning committees.
