Healthy KidsMilwaukee Public Schools (MPS) in Wisconsin receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to implement an asthma management program and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goal of the MPS asthma management program is to reduce asthma-related absences and provide education for students with asthma.

Milwaukee's Program In Action

Asthma Management

  • Providing education on asthma management programs to students, parents, teachers, support staff, physical educators, and athletic coaches.
     
  • Educating students with asthma on how to properly use their inhalers, peak flow meters, and spacers.
     
  • Collaborating with school staff to reduce asthma triggers in MPS classrooms to increase school attendance among students with asthma.
     
  • Collaborating with community partners to implement a comprehensive asthma awareness plan in schools with high rates of students with asthma.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS to collect data on youth risk behaviors that are representative of Milwaukee students in grades 6-12.
     
  • Using the YRBS results in planning and improving programs and policies that address the health risk behaviors of Milwaukee’s youth.
