Los Angeles' Program In Action

Asthma Management

• Disseminating information about LAUSD’s asthma program, policies, and resources to staff, students, parents, and community members through the LAUSD asthma website.
   
• Coordinating with school nurses, physicians, and others to identify students most impacted by asthma and facilitate access for these students to the Breathmobile program, a cooperative partnership with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America and the Los Angeles Department of Health.
   
• Providing training to physical education teachers from secondary schools to increase their awareness of asthma and provide strategies for helping students with asthma engage in the standards-based physical education curriculum.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

• Conducting professional development events for teachers and other school staff on the district adopted, research-based HIV/AIDS curriculum.
   
• Developing a comprehensive youth involvement strategy focusing on the HIV/AIDS prevention needs of sexual minority youth, Latino/Hispanic youth, African American youth, and Native American youth.
   
• Developing a plan to expand the current LAUSD HIV prevention program website to better address the HIV/AIDS prevention needs of parents and students throughout the district.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

• Administering the YRBS to a representative sample of high school students in grades 9–12.
   
• Using data from the high school YRBS to monitor the health-related behaviors of youth in Los Angeles, guide program planning, and evaluate the District’s school-based health programs.
   
• Disseminating findings of the YRBS through executive summaries and user-friendly brochures to schools, district staff, community agencies, decision makers, and relevant youth groups.
