Healthy AdolescentsArizona’s Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) is a collaborative effort between the Arizona Department of Education and the Arizona Department of Health. Arizona receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

Arizona's Program In Action

Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Coordinating a statewide coalition of public and private partners in health and education to strengthen PANT efforts, develop strategies to address health disparities, enhance school level capacity to implement coordinated school health, and inform decision-makers and public regarding the health status of Arizona’s youth.

  • Providing targeted assistance to local education agencies on development, implementation, and evaluation of Local Wellness Policies.

  • Implementing the Coordinated School Health Professional Development Institute to build the capacity of school staff and provide tools and strategies for promoting CSH and PANT activities to improve academic achievement.

  • Evaluating progress toward building capacity, conducting staff development, revising health and physical education standards, and disseminating resource materials.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Providing professional development opportunities and trainings on the characteristics of educational approaches and methods that create effective sexual health and HIV/AIDS prevention.

  • Partnering with the Arizona Parent-Teacher Association to provide trainings for local school districts on how to improve parent-child communication about HIV infection and other sensitive issues; and partnering with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Arizona to provide Reducing the Risk Curricula at four juvenile correction facilities.

  • Maintaining the Arizona Adolescent School Health Listserv to communicate trainings, up-to-date research, funding announcements, and professional development opportunities.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS in high schools throughout Arizona to obtain data representative of students in grades 9−12.

  • Creating a brochure and a report to communicate YRBS results.

  • Disseminating the YRBS results report and brochure to stakeholders across the state.
