From March 2003–February 2008, the
School District of Palm Beach County in Florida received funding from CDC’s
Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education
and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).For information on Palm

Past Program
Activities
Provided HIV
Prevention Education
- Developed and disseminated HIV prevention education curriculum
materials for
grades 6–12.
- Partnered with the American Red Cross to conduct supplemental HIV
prevention presentations for students in middle schools, high schools,
and alternative education programs.
- Provided professional development for teachers and school staff on
topics including an introduction to HIV and STDs; HIV-related laws,
policies, and practices; and strategies for teaching the district HIV
prevention curriculum.
Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Collected data on youth risk behaviors that are representative of Palm
Beach County students in middle and high school.
- Developed a YRBS brochure to summarize key results and describe
trends in health behaviors over time.
- Disseminated the YRBS brochure to the superintendent and other key
district staff, school board members, Palm Beach County Department of
Health, School Health Advisory Council, other community partners, and
school nurses.
