About SHPPS

SHPPS is a national survey periodically conducted to assess school health policies and programs at the state, district, school, and classroom levels. Results from SHPPS 2000 are published in the Journal of School Health, Volume 71, Number 7, September 2001.

School-Based Health Centers (SBHCs)
Definition of SBHCs

  • SBHCs were defined on the SHPPS 2000 questionnaires as "health centers on school property where enrolled students can receive primary care, including diagnostic and treatment services." SBHCs offering mental health and social services were defined as "health centers on school property where enrolled students can receive mental health and social services including diagnostic and treatment services. "These services are "usually provided by a psychologist, social worker, counselor, or other mental health or social services professional."

Health Services

  • 89.1% of states have at least one SBHC that provides health services to students. The number of SBHCs in each state ranges from 1 to 163 with an average of 27.1.
     
  • Among the states with SBHCs, 70.7% provide funding for SBHCs and 85.4% have at least one SBHC that serves as a Medicaid provider.
     
  • 12.9% of districts have at least one SBHC in their district. The number of SBHCs per district ranges from 1 to 50.
     
  • 65.4% of districts with a SBHC provide funding for SBHCs.
     
  • 6.5% of schools have a SBHC that offers health services to students.

Mental Health and Social Services

  • 79.5% of states have at least one SBHC that provides services to meet the mental health and social services needs of students. The number of SBHCs in each state providing mental health and social services ranges from 1 to 362 with a median of 14.
     
  • Among the states with SBHCs offering mental health and social services, 87.1% have at least one SBHC that serves as a Medicaid provider.
     
  • 24.9% of districts have at least one SBHC that offers mental health and social services to students.
     
  • 10.4% of schools have a SBHC that offers mental health and social services to students.

Services Provided at Other Sites
Health Services

  • 18.8% of states require districts or schools to provide health services to students through collaborative arrangements with health care agencies, organizations, or professionals not located on school property.
     
  • 37.5% of districts and 33.0% of schools have such arrangements.

Mental Health and Social Services

  • 28.6% of states require districts or schools to provide mental health and social services to students through arrangements with agencies, organizations, or professionals not located on school property.
     
  • 59.0% of districts and 51.6% of schools have such arrangements.
