The Society of State Leaders of Health and Physical Education
The Society is a professional association whose members supervise and coordinate programs in health, physical education, and related fields within state departments of education.
The Society's Program in Action
The Society is funded under two Capacity-Building Assistance categories:
- Preventing HIV Infections: State and Local Education Agencies.
- Preventing Chronic Diseases: Promoting Coordinated School Health Programs (CSHPs).
For Preventing HIV Infections: State and Local Education Agencies, The Society is
- Working with the National Stakeholders Collaborative (NSC) to strengthen collaboration between state health and education agencies to support and improve prevention of HIV, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and unintended pregnancy for youth. The NSC is comprised of the Society, the National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD), the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD), and the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP). During Year 5, the NSC is:
- Providing follow-up technical assistance to the states who participated in the National Stakeholder Meeting (NSM) 2.0 in the form of conference calls, one content specific webinar series, and the opportunity to apply for intensive technical assistance support.
- Reviewing evaluation data from the cooperative agreement to identify the impact of the Collaborative activities and determine strategic direction for the partnership.
- Conducting a comprehensive year-end evaluation with the state teams to determine and document outcomes of the process.
- Developing and launching a web-based resource to enhance access to relevant resources from the internal State Team Clearinghouse and enable networking among users.
- Disseminating two documents to communicate the lessons learned and success stories from the NSC and NSM process to public health and education professionals.
- Providing professional development events to address HIV Prevention SLIMs, according to the needs of the collaborative members; and to enhance the skills and learning for HIV Coordinators.
- Providing capacity building assistance to New Mexico and Arkansas to launch and support their HIV prevention efforts.
- Sponsoring a one-day workshop for all DASH-funded SEA and LEA coordinators to increase capacity to develop, implement, and evaluate effective HIV prevention programs, policies, and practices.

For Preventing Chronic Diseases: Promoting Coordinated School Health Programs (CSHPs), The Society is
- Developing an updated version of the PowerPoint® presentation Making the Connection, a CSH advocacy tool for state and local education decision-makers, parents, teachers, and administrators to demonstrate the connection between student health and academic achievement.
- Working jointly with the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) and the Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE) in the Coordinated School Health Collaborative. The Collaborative will provide capacity building assistance to state education and health agency teams to improve the delivery, effectiveness, and sustainability of coordinated school health programs.
- Providing technical assistance via conference calls, website support, resource identification, and on-site visits to CSH Coordinators to advance understanding and implementation of CSH at the state and local levels.
- Updating and maintaining online technical assistance resources to build state education agency capacity to implement CSH on the local level.
- Updating and maintaining an online, searchable directory of CSH staff within state education and health agencies.
