The city of Atlanta is in the center of a sprawling metropolitan area with a population of more than 5,000,000 people, many of whom come from countries all over the globe. Atlanta is the capital of the state of Georgia and a national commercial, communications, and business center. As an important city in the American antebellum South and the home of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., father of the American civil rights movement, it is a city with rich and unique cultural and historic roots. Atlanta is also the home of world-class educational institutions, such as Emory University and Georgia Tech.
