Service Staffing and Delivery Models

Diabetes education has traditionally been provided by nurses and registered dietitians, and these health professionals are still an important part of the education team.20 Current practice also includes registered pharmacists as part of the DSMES multidisciplinary team where team members work interdependently, consult with one another, and have shared objectives.

As the health care environment continues to change, other health professionals are increasingly involved in the provision of DSMES information and behavioral support and in linking with the health care system.1 Standard 3 in the 2022 National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support sets minimum requirements for DSMES service staffing.
