The Global Health Initiative (GHI) is the next step forward in the way U.S. government agencies conduct global health activities. GHI is making the most of every taxpayer dollar to improve the health of the poorest families around the world, with a specific focus on improving the health of women, newborns and children through programs that focus on infectious disease, nutrition, maternal and child health, and safe water. To ensure that every dollar achieves maximum impact, CDC has created a new country management strategy for managing overseas resources. (For more information, visit the Global Health funding page.)

Through GHI, the U.S. helps build sustainable health systems, ensuring that global health agencies combine their efforts to maximize results. This strategy allows GHI to save lives in the short-term, and create the conditions where continued assistance is no longer necessary.

GHI delivers on that commitment through a comprehensive, whole-of-government approach that specifically targets reductions in death and disease with a fundamental emphasis on GHI principles.

GHI Countries

The U.S. has global health investments and programs in approximately 80 countries worldwide, and all of these countries will be included in GHI. Eight countries have already been selected as the first set of “GHI Plus” countries: Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Nepal, and Rwanda. These countries will receive additional technical and management resources to quickly implement GHI’s approach. Explore the interactive map and list to learn about CDC's work in these GHI countries.
