Major Findings

Sawyer and Milwaukee County have the highest nonadherence rates, and Iron and Florence County have the lowest nonadherence rates. Medication nonadherence is a statewide issue that needs to be addressed. Other indicators, such as demographics or population, will be included in future maps to better inform decisions.

How the map will be used, or has been used

This map will be used to identify geographical areas or pharmacies where medication adherence strategies or interventions can be targeted by any of the collaborative work between the Wisconsin Chronic Disease Prevention Program, the Wisconsin Division of Medicaid, and the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Medicaid pharmacy claims data for 2014, 2015 and 2016; Community and Retail Pharmacies from the National Provider Identifier Registry, National Plan and Provider Enumeration System, 2014 (taxonomy code 336C0003X) provided by Rice University; Wisconsin Pharmacy Quality Collaborative pharmacy locations provided by Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin.

Prevalence of blood pressure medication nonadherence calculated using the number of Medicaid members that are identified as nonadherent out of the total number of Medicaid members taking blood pressure medications within each county. Medicaid member identified as nonadherent when there is less than 80% proportion of days covered with blood pressure medications. The county was associated with the Medicaid member’s address on record. Prevalence of nonadherence was mapped using the quantile classification method in ArcGIS 10.3.
