Impact Statement

This map demonstrates the burden of hypertension in Kansas, identifies the location of CDC-recognized lifestyle change programs, and assesses the accessibility to those programs. This map is significant to program planning to help increase access to intervention programs for people with hypertension in Kansas.

This map displays the region-level prevalence of hypertension among adults aged 18 years and older in 2017. Kansas divides the state into 16 Public Health Preparedness Regions (shown as bolded border in the map). The highest prevalence (40.6 percent - 41.7 percent) of hypertension is in the northcentral and northwest regions of the state. The lowest prevalence (21.3 percent - 29.8 percent) of hypertension is primarily seen in the southwest corner of the state. This map also features the locations and drive times to reach a CDC-recognized lifestyle change program. As of April 15th, 2019, there were 17 CDC-recognized organizations offering in-person programs in Kansas. The locations are concentrated in the northeast region and the southcentral region; areas that have high population density. Approximately 61.5 percent of Kansas adults aged 18 years and older live within a 30-minute drive time to a CDC-recognized lifestyle change program.

This choropleth map displays the region-level prevalence of hypertension among adults aged 18 years and older based on the 2017 Kansas BRFSS. Regions were defined as the 16 Public Health Preparedness Regions. The prevalence of hypertension was divided into quartiles. Locations of CDC-recognized lifestyle change programs were retrieved from CDC National Diabetes prevention website on April 15th, 2019. The locations were geocoded using ArcGIS Pro 911 Composite. Only on-site locations of the programs were displayed. Drive time to CDC-recognized lifestyle change programs was calculated using ArcGIS Pro Network Analysis. Fifteen-minute and 30-minute service areas were displayed. Lastly, tract-level population weighted centroids derived from the 2017 American Community Survey were used to estimate the percentage of the Kansas adult population (18 years and older) living within a 30-minute drive time to a CDC-recognized lifestyle change program.
