Annual reports that present detailed vital statistics data, including natality, mortality, marriage and divorce. These reports are available for download or as bound volumes in many large public and university libraries. Technical details about the data are presented in the Technical Appendix section of Vital Statistics of the United States and as a separate document after 1993 for mortality data.

NOTE: Population-based rates included in the report, "Report of Final Natality Statistics, 1995," and "Vital Statistics of the United States, 1995, Volume I, Natality," are based on postcensal population estimates consistent with the 1990 census. Rates for these years have recently been revised using more accurate population estimates based on the results of the 2000 census, and are available in: National Vital Statistics Report, Volume 51, Number 12 [PDF - 1.2 MB].  The 1990 based estimates are used in this report for consistency with reports in the series that have already been published and will not be reissued.  The cohort-fertility rates included in "Vital Statistics of the United States, 1995, Volume I, Natality," are based on postcensal population estimates consistent with the 1990 census. These rates will be revised based on the results of the 2000 census when population data in the necessary detail become available.

 NOTE: Population-based rates included in the report, "Report of Final Natality Statistics, 1996," and here in "Vital Statistics of the United States, 1996, Volume I, Natality," are based on postcensal population estimates consistent with the 1990 census. Rates for 1996 have recently been revised using more accurate population estimates that incorporate the results of the 2000 census, and are available in: National Vital Statistics Report, Volume 51, Number 12 [PDF - 1.1 MB]. The 1990 based estimates are used in this report for consistency with reports in the series that have already been published and will not be reissued using the intercensal population estimates. The cohort-fertility rates included in "Vital Statistics of the United States, 1996, Volume I, Natality," are based on postcensal population estimates consistent with the 1990 census. These rates will be revised based on the results of the 2000 census when population data in the necessary detail become available.

Final Release of Files

Tables 30-37 are being re-released with small changes in table titles and some formatting adjustments.  No other substantive changes have been made.

The following tables are part of the Internet release of Vital Statistics of the United States, 1997, Volume I, Natality. The first release of files was in April 2000 which consisted of 12 tables. A second release was in August 2000, consisting of an additional 12 tables. This is the third and final release of tables - there are 39 tables in total. Production of a CD-ROM containing these tables is currently in progress. There will no longer be hardbound volumes. We hope that you find these new methods of releasing these data useful. The 1997 Natality Technical Appendix [PDF - 471 KB] describes the data contained in the tables. Tables that include data only for 1980 and earlier years are updated in Births: Final Data for 1997.

The birth and fertility rates contained in Vital Statistics of the United States, 2003, Volume I, Natality, may differ from rates contained in previously published reports in the series. Those rates that were based on postcensal population estimates consistent with the 1990 census, where as rates in this report for 1992-1999 are based on intercensal estimates. In addition, Tables 1-30 through 1-37 published in earlier years (which contain cohort-fertility rates) are currently being revised to incorporate the 2000 postcensal estimates and are not available at this time.  These tables will be available at this Website in the near future.
