Public Health Exercise I:  In-class Participation

  • Students should prepare for classes by reading the assigned materials and come prepared to engage with the speakers and the rest of the class.
  • During the semester, we will ask students to participate in several class exercises and discussions related to a particular public health problem. Students may be asked to take a position related to that particular public health problem and address potential legal and policy issues. We will discuss the assignments more during the semester.

Public Health Exercise II:  Final Exam

Students will take the position of a public health agency’s legal counsel in addressing key aspects of law implicated in the health agency director’s management of a public health problem identified by the course instructors.  Students will provide a written memorandum to the health agency director specifically identifying the public health problem with some supporting scientific background; analyzing the legal authority for undertaking the public health activity; analyzing the possible legal and policy challenges to undertaking the public health activity; and making a recommendation on enacting the requirement, which includes possible alternatives. We will discuss the assignment more during the semester.
