4.3 Population Estimates

The resident population estimates that are used to calculate injury death rates in WISQARS Fatal Injury Mapping were produced by the U.S. Census Bureau in collaboration with the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). For calendar years 2008 – 2009, the population figures represent bridged-race intercensal estimates. These intercensal estimates combine information from the year 2000 decennial census and the year 2010 decennial census. For calendar year 2010, the population figures represent bridged-race estimates for April 2010, based on the year 2010 decennial census only. For calendar years 2011 – 2014 the population figures represent bridged-race postcensal estimates, also based on the 2010 decennial census. These bridged-race estimates are relatively consistent with the population estimates used by NCHS, in conjunction with data from the National Vital Statistics System, to calculate mortality rates. Further information about bridged-race population data is available from the NCHS website.
