Map Details – South Dakota Blood Pressure Medication Nonadherence and Select Socioeconomic Status Variables

Impact Statement

This map was created to guide and identify target areas for heart disease prevention efforts within South Dakota.

Key Points

Major Findings

Data from the American Community Survey was used to examine patterns among select socioeconomic variables (percent poverty, percent less than high school education and median household income by county) in relation to blood pressure medication nonadherence to better understand potential health inequities.  There appears to be correlation between medication nonadherence and the select socioeconomic variables. The highest rates among the socioeconomic variables are found in similar geographic locations to the highest rates of blood pressure medication nonadherence, specifically in the west central area of the state.
