Map Details – Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Centers, Intensive Care Units, and Heart Disease Death Rates, by County, Florida

Impact Statement

This map shows the location of hospitals with cardiac rehabilitation and cardiac intensive care, and the age-adjusted heart disease death rates across Florida for the period 2014-2016. Among the counties in the top tertile for cardiac rehabilitation centers (numbers 5 – 6), were Southeastern counties: Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach; Central region counties: Lake, Pinellas, and Volusia; and Duval County, located in the northeastern region. Among the counties in the top tertile for cardiac intensive care units (numbers 7 – 10), were Southeastern counties: Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm; Central region counties Pinellas and Volusia; and Northern region counties: Alachua and Duval. The average age-adjusted heart disease death rate in Florida during 2014-2016 was 145.8 per 100,000 population. Among the counties in the top quintile (death rates 370.9 – 535.7 per 100,000 population), were Central region counties: Citrus, Okeechobee, and Marion; and Northern region counties: Franklin, Hamilton, Holmes, Jackson, Liberty, Madison, Suwanee, Union, Wakulla, and Washington Counties in the northern regions. Among the counties in the bottom quintile (death rates 181.3 – 271.1), were Southern region counties: Collier, Lee, Desoto, Charlotte, Martin, and Palm Beach; Central region counties: Manatee, Seminole, Sarasota, and Sumter; and Northern region counties: Alachua and Leon.

This map highlights discrepancies between the locations of cardiac rehabilitation centers and cardiac intensive care units versus the magnitude of heart disease death rates in Florida for the period 2014-2016. Counties in the top quintile of heart disease death rates are located primarily in the northern regions of Florida. However, among the northern counties in the top quintile, only Jackson and Marion Counties have facilities with cardiac rehabilitation or cardiac intensive care. The lowest rates of heart disease death were seen in counties located mostly in the southern regions of the state. These southern counties have the highest numbers of hospitals with cardiac rehabilitation or cardiac intensive care.
