Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs) around the world are responding to COVID-19 on the frontlines but need tools and training to specifically address NCDs. To support FETPs in the fight against NCDs in the midst of the pandemic response, CDC and RTI International developed the FETP: NCD COVID-19 Toolkit. The toolkit helps FETP trainees develop the skills needed to integrate NCDs into public health responses while reinforcing best practices for infectious disease control.

Scientific Writing eLearning Course

CDC has worked with TEPHINET (Training Programs in Epidemiology and Public Health Interventions Network) to create an eight-part Scientific Writing eLearning course. It is for Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) residents or graduates, junior-level scientists, and any members of the public interested in scientific writing. To learn more, visit TEPHINET’s Scientific Writing eLearning course page.

General NCD Training Modules

To strengthen noncommunicable disease (NCD) capacity globally and to improve skills in NCD surveillance, prevention and control, CDC has developed a series of NCD Training Modules which can be downloaded and adapted by public health practitioners, health educators and others. The NCD training materials are comprised of 24 modules, designed to:

  • Increase capacity in NCD epidemiology and program management
  • Provide a basic understanding of NCDs
  • Complement Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) projects and mentorship
  • Increase capacity for disease surveillance, prevention, management and control

Visit NCD Field Epidemiology Training to learn more about FETP NCD training.

Hypertension Management Training Modules

To enhance hypertension management capacity at the primary care level and to strengthen program monitoring, CDC has developed a Hypertension Management Training Curriculum in collaboration with the World Health Organization, Resolve to Save Lives, and partners. The curriculum is designed for primary health care providers, health care facility managers, and district supervisors and is adaptable to country context. The training curriculum is comprised of seven modules and equips participants with the skills to:

  • Effectively diagnose and treat hypertension
  • Make hypertension management patient-focused
  • Strengthen patient and hypertension program monitoring

Hypertension Management Bibliography

An annotated bibliography for hypertension control [257KB, 25 Pages] was developed by CDC and RTI International with the assistance of Resolve to Save Lives and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health as a resource for the implementation of hypertension prevention and management programs.

Cancer Prevention and Control Training Modules

To increase capacity for surveillance, prevention, management, and control of cancer, CDC developed a Cancer Prevention and Control Curriculum for field epidemiology training programs, ministry of health staff, and public health personnel in low- and middle-income countries. The curriculum consists of four modules paired with case studies and field exercises to reinforce important concepts.
