Devery Howerton is Deputy Director for the Division of Laboratory Programs, Standards, and Services. Prior to this position, she served as Director of the Division of Laboratory Science and Standards and the Director of the Laboratory Quality Management Program for infectious disease laboratories, a program she helped establish at CDC. Her CDC experience also includes a 10-year appointment in the Division of Laboratory Systems (DLS) where she served as chief for two branches. She has extensive experience in the laboratory medicine field, working in various capacities in research, hospital, reference, and public health laboratories.
Dr. Howerton received a bachelor’s degree in medical technology from the Medical University of South Carolina, a Master of Science degree in microbiology and immunology, and a doctorate degree in experimental pathology and laboratory medicine from Emory University. She serves on the board of directors for the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), chairs the CLSI Consensus Committee on Quality Systems and Laboratory Practices, and is the CDC representative to the Joint Commission Laboratory Professional and Technical Advisory Committee.
