Course Description: This 4-day (32 hours) training course provides knowledge and experience in assessing, monitoring, and tracking health effects among emergency responders and community members before, during, and after a disaster. These effects can occur from exposures to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, explosive, and other hazards. The course trains attendees on disaster epidemiologic tools developed by the U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). These tools combine Emergency Responder Health Monitoring and Surveillance™ (ERHMS™), Assessment of Chemical Exposure (ACE), and Epi CASE (Contact Assessment Symptom and Exposure).

Target Audience:

  • Public health workers, such as emergency preparedness staff, epidemiologists, and environmental and occupational health specialists
  • First responder agencies’ management and leadership, such as incident commanders or other decision makers responsible for deploying resources to an emergency or disaster (e.g., emergency medical services, law enforcement, fire services)
  • Emergency management
  • Critical infrastructure management, such as public works
  • Medical professionals, such as emergency room physicians, clinicians, and risk managers
  • Health and safety representatives
  • Non-governmental organizations, such as Medical Reserve Corps and American Red Cross, and private sector, such as response and recovery organizations

*The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) covers state, local, tribal, and territorial (SLTT) attendee expenses to attend any FEMA CDP course. These expenses include travel to and from their residence, lodging, and meals. An electronic ticket is provided to the student if flying. If driving, the personal owned vehicle would be reimbursed at the lesser rate of airline ticket or mileage rate. Students also get reimbursed for baggage fees, parking at the home airport, and travel from their residence to the airport. Shuttle service is provided from Atlanta International Airport at no cost to the CDP campus.

**Federal attendees provide their own travel arrangements, $25/night at the campus lodging, and their own meal expenses. There is generally a small tuition fee for federal attendees.
