QuickStats: Percentage of Adults Aged ≥18 Years Who Were Current Cigarette Smokers,* by Race/Ethnicity --- National Health Interview Survey, United States, 2004--2008§

The figure shows the percentage of adults aged ≥18 years in the United States who were current cigarette smokers, by race and ethnicity, based on National Health Interview Survey data for 2004-2008. During that period, 20.5% of adults aged ≥18 years were current cigarette smokers. American Indian /Alaska Native adults (32.7%) were most likely to currently smoke cigarettes, and Asian adults (10.4%) were least likely to be current smokers.

* Current smokers have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime and currently smoke every day or some days. Unknowns were not included in the denominators when calculating percentages.

Race refers to persons who indicated only a single race group and are not of Hispanic ethnicity. Persons of Hispanic ethnicity might be of any race or combination of races.

§ Estimates are age adjusted using the projected 2000 U.S. population as the standard population and using four age groups: 18--24 years, 25--44 years, 45--64 years, and ≥65 years. Estimates are based on household interviews of a sample of the civilian, noninstitutionalized U.S. population.
