National Trends in COPD

CDC monitors national trends in diagnosed COPD and deaths from COPD among U.S. adults.
From 2011 to 2022, COPD was stable among adults.
From 1999 to 2021, COPD death rates decreased overall and in men.

Highlights

COPD death rates among adults 45 and older decreased from 1999 to 2021 overall and among men.
Differences in death rates between men and women were smaller in 2021 than in 1999.

COPD

COPD prevents airflow to the lungs, causing breathing problems. The most common types are emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Smoking is the main cause of COPD.
