When the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) began 16 years ago, 50,000 people in Africa were on HIV treatment. As of 2019, PEPFAR has helped 15.7 million people access lifesaving treatment and saved more than 17 million lives. As a key implementer of PEPFAR, CDC plays a unique role – bringing scientific and on-the-ground expertise to bear in the fight against HIV.
