National Health Interview Survey Linked Mortality Files
NCHS has conducted a linkage of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) with the National Death Index (NDI). Linkage of the NHIS survey participants with the NDI provides the opportunity to conduct studies designed to investigate the association of a variety of health factors with mortality, using the richness of the NHIS core and supplement questionnaires. The 2004 version of the NHIS linked mortality files supersedes all previous versions of the NHIS linked mortality data. The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) linked mortality files contain information based upon the results from a probabilistic match between NHIS and the NCHS National Death Index (NDI) records. The 2004 release of NHIS linked mortality files include the NHIS survey years 1986 through 2000 with mortality follow-up through December 31, 2002. Each NHIS survey year is available on a separate data file, with the file format being the same for all years. All NHIS participants are included on the linked mortality files but only adult participants (those 18 years and older) were eligible for mortality follow-up. A variable indicating eligibility status is provided on the files. Additional variables provided on the files include: assigned vital status, date of death, age of death, underlying and multiple causes of death. NHIS linked mortality file variables at a glance NHIS Public use ID Eligibility status Final mortality status Date of death Age at death Age when last presumed alive Underlying cause of death codes (ICD-9 and ICD-10) Underlying cause of death recodes (ICD-9 and ICD-10) Multiple cause of death entity axis codes Multiple cause of death record axis codes Adjusted sample weights Date of birth Date of NHIS interview Age at NHIS interview New PSU defined for NHIS 1986-2000 New Strata defined for NHIS 1986-2000 List of data file variables available by special request Data file technical characteristics The NHIS linked mortality files are available in SAS and ASCII file formats. The following list provides the number of file records per survey. NHIS 1986 62,052 NHIS 1987 122,859 NHIS 1988 122,310 NHIS 1989 116,929 NHIS 1990 119,631 NHIS 1991 120,032 NHIS 1992 128,412 NHIS 1993 109,671 NHIS 1994 116,179 NHIS 1995 102,467 NHIS 1996 63,402 NHIS 1997 103,477 NHIS 1998 98,785 NHIS 1999 97,059 NHIS 2000 100,618 Due to confidentiality requirements, the 2004 NHIS Linked Mortality files only are available through the NCHS Research Data Center (RDC). All interested researchers must submit a research proposal to the RDC to use the NHIS linked mortality data. The RDC offers both on-site and remote user access. Approved researchers will be able to analyze data from the NHIS standard mortality file which contains information on NHIS participant eligibility status, vital status, date of death, age at death, and underlying and contributing causes of death. Additional death certificate data are available by special request. Requests for access to special request variables should be clearly documented in the researcher’s RDC proposal.
