This page provides information on data sources for select indicators on breastfeeding, early care and education, and fruits and vegetables. More detailed methodology for each indicator can be found in the provided websites.

Breastfeeding Surveillance Sources

Indicators:

  • Births occurring at designated “baby friendly” hospitals
  • State child care regulation supports onsite breastfeeding

Data source:

Data source information is available in the Breastfeeding Report Card. This report will be published every two years.

 

Early Care and Education Surveillance Sources

Physical Activity

Indicator: State requires physical activity for child care (preschool)

Fruits and Vegetables

Indicators:

  • State child care regulations meet national standards: fruit
  • State child care regulations meet national standards: vegetables

Sugary Drinks

Indicators:

  • State child care regulations align with national standards for avoiding sugar, including concentrated sweets such as candy, sodas, sweetened drinks, fruit nectars, and flavored milk

Television Viewing

Indicators:

  • State child care regulations align with national standards for prohibiting use of media and computers with children younger than 2 years
  • State child care regulations align with national standards for limiting total media time for children 2 years or older to not more than 30 minutes once a week

Data source:

Data were derived from the National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care and Early Education (NRC) reportexternal icon. The NRC report date corresponds to the year of data release. The year of the data on Data, Trends, and Maps corresponds to the year of data collection.

 

Fruits and Vegetables Surveillance Sources

Indicator:

  • Existence of state-level Food Policy Council
  • Number of farmers markets per 100,000 residents
  • Number of food hubs in each state
  • Percent of farmers markets that accept WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons
  • State-level farm to school/preschool policy
