05/20/2022: Lab Alert: CDC Confirms Case of Mpox Virus in the United States

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are investigating a confirmed case of mpox virus in the United States. Testing at CDC on May 18, 2022 confirmed that the patient was infected with a West African strain of mpox virus. The patient is currently isolated and does not pose a risk to the public.
Laboratories with specimens that are suspected to contain mpox virus should contact the CDC Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at 770-488-7100. After consulting with CDC, laboratories can send appropriately collected specimens to CDC and/or their state public health laboratory for real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing.
