Fellowships and Training Programs
DWD supports the education, training, and development of the public health workforce. Our programs are organized to provide quality learning experiences across the workforce continuum.
Middle School, High School, and College Students
DWD promotes public health as a career choice early in the education continuum through programs for students and teachers. Training teachers is an important pathway to inspiring students as the future public health workforce.
- Science Ambassador Fellowship, for middle- and high-school STEM teachers and educational leaders
- Epidemiology Elective Program, for medical and veterinary students
College Graduates and Post-Graduates
DWD manages postgraduate experiential service learning fellowships. These programs provide robust on-the-job learning while filling critical gaps in the public health workforce in epidemiology, policy, leadership and management, economic analysis, data science, laboratory science, and others.
- Applied Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program*, for recent masters or doctoral graduates in public health informatics, data science, or a related field
- Applied Epidemiology Fellowship*, designed for recent master’s or doctoral level graduates in epidemiology or a related field
* Program is a partnership with the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists to build capacity at state and local health departments - ASPPH/CDC Public Health Fellowship Program** fosters career development in areas such as epidemiology, public health policy, health communications, biostatistics, informatics, monitoring and evaluation, and strategic information, to name a few. Fellowship assignments are full-time opportunities with possible placement at CDC headquarters in Atlanta, GA and CDC regional offices nationwide.
**Program is administered through CDC’s Public Health Leadership and Education, Advancing Health Equity and Data Science (PH LEADS) program in partnership with the Association of Schools & Programs of Public Health - CDC Evaluation Fellowship Program, for doctoral or master’s level graduates from an accredited academic institution in a field relevant to CDC’s work
- Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS), for licensed physicians, nurses, veterinarians, and doctoral level scientists
- Infectious disease (ID) physicians may apply for a new joint ID/EIS fellowship beginning in the spring of 2023
- Graduates are eligible for training as Future Leaders in Infectious and Global Health Threats
- Laboratory Leadership Service, for doctoral level laboratory scientists
- Public Health Associate Program, for recent college graduates with an interest in public health
- Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program, for doctoral or master’s level data scientists
- Prevention Effectiveness Fellowship, for doctoral level specialists in decision science
- A Public Health Analytics and Modeling Track focuses on advanced analytics and infectious disease modeling
- Presidential Management Fellowship, for recent graduates with master’s, law, or doctoral degrees
Public Health Professionals
DWD connects public health professionals with accredited, competency-based training and learning opportunities to strengthen and build their skills. All activities are based on adult learning principles and reflect CDC quality training standards.
Training Programs for Professionals
- CDC E-Learning Institute, for public health professionals who develop training products at state, local, territorial, or tribal health departments
- Data Science Upskilling Program, for CDC staff to develop a team-based foundation in data science
- Data Science Team Training Program*, for state, local, tribal, and territorial health department staff to develop a team-based foundation in data science within their own agencies

- CDC Learning Connection, which highlights quality trainings for healthcare and public health professionals via a newsletter, social media, and partner outreach
- Training and Continuing Education Online (TCEO), a system for finding, managing, and completing continuing education opportunities
