Transmission

Lone star tick

Heartland virus belongs to the genus Bandavirus, which includes viruses that can be transmitted by ticks. Recent studies have shown that the Lone Star tick (Amblyomma americanum) can transmit the virus.

It is not known if other species of ticks might also transmit the virus or if people can be infected in other ways.

Prevent getting sick with Heartland virus by preventing tick bites.
