Mr. Michael Black holds the position of Vice President, Hospital Operations, Laboratory Service Line at Ochsner Health. He previously was the Assistant Vice President of Avera McKennan’s Clinical Laboratory System and Laboratory Service Line Administrator of Avera’s Laboratory Network spanning five states and six medical regions, with over 300 locations and 18,000+ employees, including both Clinical Laboratory and Anatomic Pathology services. He has more than 30 years of experience in the laboratory environment. His leadership experience encompasses community hospitals, several laboratory outreach and inpatient laboratory settings, and the last nine years as the Assistant Vice President of Avera McKennan’s Laboratory System. Prior to that role, he served as the Laboratory Director at Baptist Saint Anthony’s Health System in Amarillo, TX. Since coming to Avera in 2012, Mr. Black has helped Avera’s Laboratory maintain the first International Organization for Standardization (ISO 15189) certification in the country, currently, the longest running hospital ISO 15189-certified laboratory in the world. He has led successful inspections for the College of American Pathologists and the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy, and ISO reaccreditation. Mr. Black led the Avera Laboratory division to attain a United Network for Organ Sharing accreditation as the only HLA laboratory in the region.
