Notice to Readers: National Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month

September is National Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month. This observance is intended to increase awareness of
gynecologic cancers, thus enabling early detection, appropriate treatment, and a greater chance for recovery. In 2004 (the most recent year
for which data are available), approximately 73,000 women in the United States were diagnosed with a cancer
affecting the reproductive organs, and approximately 27,000 women died from some form of gynecologic cancer
(1).
To raise awareness about the five major gynecologic cancers (cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar), CDC,
in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health, established the
Inside Knowledge: Get the Facts about Gynecologic Cancer campaign. This campaign aims to communicate 1) the importance
of finding gynecologic cancers early, when treatment is most effective, and 2) the need for women to pay attention to their
bodies and know what is normal for them, so that they can recognize the warning signs of gynecologic cancers. This
campaign also supports the Gynecologic Education and Awareness Act of 2005, or Johanna's Law. Additional information about
