Notice to Readers: Preventing Child Sexual Abuse Within Youth-Serving Organizations: Getting Started on Policies and Procedures

To help prevent child sexual abuse, CDC has published the report Preventing Child Sexual Abuse Within Youth-Serving Organizations: Getting Started on Policies and Procedures. This report describes six key components for preventing child sexual abuse in youth-serving organizations: 1) screening and selecting employees and volunteers; 2) establishing guidelines on interactions between persons; 3) monitoring behavior; 4) ensuring safe environments; 5) responding to inappropriate behavior, breaches in policy, and allegations and suspicions of child sexual abuse; and 6) training in child sexual-abuse prevention.

These components were identified by CDC in conjunction with child sexual-abuse researchers, professionals who provide prevention resources for organizations, and representatives of youth-serving organizations that have child sexual-abuse prevention programs. In the report, each of the six components is described in detail, including the prevention goals, critical strategies, and additional strategies that might be considered depending on the context and resources of individual organizations. The report is available online at http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/dvp/preventingchildabuse.htm.
