QuickStats: Prevalence of Overweight* Among Persons Aged 2--19 Years, by Sex --- National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), United States, 1999--2000 Through 2003--2004

* Defined as having a body mass index (weight [kg] / height [m2]) at or above the 95th percentile for age and sex based on the reference population of the CDC 2000 growth charts (available at http://www.cdc.gov/growthcharts).

From 1999--2000 through 2003--2004, the prevalence of overweight among males and females increased from 14.0% to 18.2% and from 13.8% to 16.0%, respectively. By 2003--2004, approximately 12.5 million persons aged 12--19 years (17.1%) were overweight. Additional information regarding NHANES is available at http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nhanes.htm
