Mapping the Overlap of Poverty Level and Prevalence of Diagnosed Chronic Kidney Disease Among Medicare Beneficiaries in the United States

Panel A illustrates the considerable geographic variation in the prevalence of CKD across US counties among Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 or older, showing a higher prevalence in Florida and the Appalachian region. Panel B depicts the distribution of poverty levels across the United States, highlighting a concentration of higher poverty levels in many counties in the Southeast. Panel C presents a bivariate map illustrating the underlying joint distribution of county-level poverty and CKD prevalence across the country. Many US counties in the South exhibit high levels of both poverty and CKD, while counties in the Northeast and Midwest display low levels of poverty and a high prevalence of CKD.
