Division of Viral Diseases (DVD)
Mission:
The Division of Viral Diseases (DVD) aims to prevent disease, disability, and death from viral diseases through immunization and other prevention measures.
Our Strategic Priorities:
- Optimize the safe, efficient, and effective use of vaccines to prevent viral diseases
- Identify, characterize, and evaluate new ways to prevent viral diseases
- Respond to outbreaks of viral diseases
- Improve local, state, and global capacity to prevent disease and respond to outbreaks caused by viruses
What We Do:
- Vaccines: We support the development, promotion, and evaluation of immunization strategies, to achieve and sustain high immunization coverage levels of viral vaccine preventable diseases including measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, herpes zoster, and human papillomavirus, in the United States and globally.
- Surveillance: We conduct surveillance and related activities to define patterns of, and risk factors for, infection and burden of viral diseases.
- Laboratory: Our scientists provide laboratory support for surveillance and epidemiologic studies and maintain reference/diagnostic services and expertise while working to improve diagnostic methods.
- Outbreak Preparedness and Response: We prevent and control viral diseases by conducting surveillance, supporting outbreak investigations and responses, and build viral disease detection and reporting capacity.
Where We Work:
DVD works with state and local health departments, global partners, and numerous non-governmental organizations, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Gavi, the Pan American Health Organization, and the World Health Organization.
