Understanding codes and costs
A figure depicts three boxes that explain ICD-10 and CPT codes. The box on the left describes International Statistical Classification of Diseases codes, currently in its 10th edition or ICD-10. ICD-10 codes explain why the person sought medical attention. The middle box describes Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Codes. CPT codes correspond to a particular procedure, service, device or treatment. The box on the right describes the general category relating to the specific ICD-10 and CPT codes. Two examples are listed in each box to demonstrate the relationship between the ICD-10 and CPT codes. Example 1 is ICD-10 code E11.9 for adult onset diabetes without complications in the box on the left, CPT code 82962 for a blood glucose monitoring device in the middle box, under the general category of diseases of other endocrine glands in the box on the right. Example 2 is ICD-10 code V25.1 for flu vaccination in the box on the left, CPT code 90660 for intranasal flu vaccine in the middle box, under the general category of preventive care in the box on the right.
