Our goal is to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes by 2022.
Every 37 seconds, an adult dies from a heart attack, stroke, or other adverse outcomes of cardiovascular disease (CVD). These deaths account for about one third (30.6%) of all deaths in the United States, or more than 850,000 deaths each year. About 1 in 5 of these deaths is a person younger than 65.
Million Hearts works with many partner organizations to
- Keep people healthyby promoting healthier levels of sodium consumption, increasing physical activity, and decreasing tobacco use
- Make sure people get the medical care they need to prevent or treat heart attacks and strokes (also known as “optimizing care”)
- Focus on priority populations who are at higher risk for having a heart attack or stroke
