The Vision and Eye Health Surveillance System (VEHSS) was developed using a 5-step approach:
Identify and select available data
Four major types of data were identified, evaluated, and selected to be included in the surveillance system: national surveys, administrative claims records, electronic health records, and population-based studies.
Define data indicators and case definitions
Data indicators and case definitions were initially developed to prioritize the measures that would be used by key stakeholders and to organize different types of data into similar categories.
Generate single-source estimates
The VEHSS’s single source estimates provide an opportunity to compare prevalence estimates across varied data sources using a consistent set of measurement definitions.
Integrate data sources into comprehensive estimates
The VEHSS will use innovative statistical modeling to integrate various data sources into national prevalence estimates.
Transparency and dissemination
Open and inclusive communication with intended users is vital to further refine and improve the system over time.
