In 2012, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) convened a committee to gather expert opinion and scientific evidence about the safety of the recommended childhood immunization schedule as a whole.  The committee found that, although individual and certain combinations of vaccines are studied routinely, there are relatively few published studies examining the schedule in its entirety.

In its report, the committee recommended that the Vaccine Safety Datalink vaccine monitoring system be used to conduct more research.  This white paper, commissioned by the CDC Immunization Safety Office, outlines how the Vaccine Safety Datalink system could add to the knowledge base related to the childhood immunization schedule.
