CDC CVRS – What’s New in Version 3 for Jurisdictions & Federal Partners


This page catalogs the changes from version 2 to version 3 of the CDC COVID-19 Vaccination Reporting Specification (CVRS). This guidance applies to all submitting entities that were previously using CVRS version 2 to submit data to the COVID-19 Data Clearinghouse, including jurisdictions and federal partners.

What’s New in Version 3 provides jurisdiction and federal entity data submitters with updated guidance for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) COVID-19 Vaccination Reporting Specification (CVRS) files. This document catalogs the changes from version 2 to version 3 of the CVRS to help submitting entities understand which data fields have been updated. The changes are listed by data field and include a short description of what jurisdictions and federal entities can expect in the newest version of the CVRS.

Instruction Changes

  • Clarified language around data models in the “Introduction.”
  • Updated guidance in the “Extract Timing” section clarifying that CVRS files must be sent every day, including weekends and holidays.
  • Provided instructions on file naming conventions for additions, updates, and deletes.
  • Updated version number at the bottom of instructions.

Redacted Extract Fields Changes

Identified Extract Fields Changes

  • The “Identified Extract Fields” tab is new and contains the specifications for reporting identified vaccination administration information.
  • The “Identified Extract Field” specification contains the same information as the “Redacted Extract Fields” specification, except for the population requirements for identified data fields. These data fields include:
    • Recipient name: First
    • Recipient name: Middle
    • Recipient name: Last
    • Recipient address: Street
    • Recipient address: Street 2
    • Recipient address: City
  • The population requirements for identified data fields listed above were changed from “Required.” The updated version sets the values listed as “Redacted” in the “Redacted Extract Fields” specification and to “Required, if known” in the “Identified Extract Fields” specification.

Privacy-Preserving Record Linkage (PPRL) Extract Fields Changes

  • The “PPRL Extract Fields” tab is new and contains the specifications for reporting PPRL extracts.
  • The “PPRL Extract Fields” specification contains the same information as the “Redacted Extract Fields” specification, except for the extract type value.

Submitting Entity Codes Changes

  • This tab was removed from the workbook.

Provider Submitter Instructions

  • The “Provider Submitter Instructions” tab is new and provides additional instructions to pharmacy and dialysis submitting entities for various data fields.
    • NOTE: This tab is not applicable to jurisdictional and federal entity submitters.
  • This tab replaces the previously separate “Instructions to Pharmacies” document.

Provider Submitter Admin Types

  • The “Provider Submitter Admin Types” tab is new and contains the full list of administration types that pharmacy and dialysis submitters use to populate the “Administered at location: type” data field.
    •  NOTE: This tab is not applicable to jurisdictional and Federal Entity submitters.
  • This tab replaces the list of “Administered at location: type” options listed in the “Instructions to Pharmacies” document.
