Diagnostic Testing

Laboratory diagnosis is usually based on detection of specific IgM in either blood or CSF. There are no commercially available tests for TBE virus infection in the United States. Diagnostic testing can be performed at the CDC. TBE virus is closely related to Powassan virus, a domestic arbovirus also transmitted by ticks, and serologic cross-reactivity can occur.

Clinicians should contact their state or local health department for assistance with diagnostic testing. They can assist you with determining if samples should be sent to the CDC Arbovirus Diagnostic Laboratory for further testing. Specimens should be submitted to CDC through state health departments, and all results will be sent to the appropriate state health departments.
