Identification of Other Streptococcus Species

Streptococcus is a diverse genus of recognized species and its classification has changed several times in recent years. Streptococci are firmicutes of the order Lactobacillales and belong to family Streptococcaceae. Among the currently established genera of catalase-negative, Gram-positive cocci are several genera that were split off from the genus Streptococcus some time ago, such as Enterococcus and Lactococcus, or more recently Abiotrophia, Granulicatella, Facklamia and Globicatella.
