Jurisdiction

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) operates quarantine stations in El Paso and San Diego. The El Paso and San Diego quarantine jurisdiction includes all ports of entry in Arizona, New Mexico, San Diego and Imperial Counties in Southern California, and South and West Texas (Health Districts 8–11). This includes the seaports of San Diego; international airports; and the US–Mexico land border crossings.

Quarantine Station Activities

Illness response

  • Respond to reports of illness at land border crossings, international airports, and on maritime vessels (cruise and cargo).
  • Assist tuberculosis (TB) patients with continuity of treatment through CureTB and illness response partners.
  • Review medical records of migrants who will reside permanently in the United States.
  • Monitor importations that may have pathogens infectious to humans.
  • Partner with other federal agencies, local and state health departments, private medical providers, and hospitals in preparedness activities related to quarantine and isolation at ports of entry and Mexico.
