NLAPH offers an innovative style of leadership development by bringing together teams of leaders from multiple sectors who actively engage their communities to improve population health and achieve health equity.
CDC and AmeriCorps, the federal agency for volunteering and national service, joined forces to launch the new Public Health AmeriCorps program and support the recruitment, training, and development of a new generation of public health leaders who will be ready to respond to the nation’s public health needs.
Competencies are the knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that contribute to individual and organizational performance. In public health settings, many competency models are being used to develop a strong workforce that can support community health needs.

The Public Health Associate Program (PHAP), within the Public Health Infrastructure Center, is a competitive, two-year, paid CDC training program. PHAP associates are assigned to public health agencies and organizations in the United States and US territories, where they gain hands-on experience for a career in public health.
