Harold W. Jaffe, M.D.
Dr. Jaffe was recognized as a national and international leader of the disease investigation of HIV/AIDS. His groundbreaking research includes the first national case–control study of AIDS, the first study showing that Kaposi’s sarcoma was caused by infection, the first cohort study to define the natural history of HIV infection, and the first study establishing a case of HIV transmission from a health care worker to a patient. His work has profoundly influenced scientific knowledge about HIV/AIDS, affecting national and international approaches to prevention and control.

Walter A. Orenstein, M.D.
Dr. Orenstein was recognized for his leadership in reducing the occurrence of vaccine–preventable diseases in children. His work has been critical to the development of national vaccine policy and global immunization strategies. Among the many accomplishments attributable to his leadership are the elimination of indigenous measles in the United States, the introduction of five vaccines for routine use, the development of a national surveillance system for the immunization of preschool children, and progress in global polio eradication and measles control.
