Seasonal Flu in the Workplace

In the 2019-2020 season, influenza caused 39-56 million illnesses and 24-62 thousand deaths. NIOSH actively works to minimize work-related risks of catching influenza (flu) infections through research, service, and partnerships with other parts of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other governmental and non-governmental partners. The most current information on seasonal influenza activity can be found on the CDC influenza website.

Influenza (Flu) and Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)
  • Getting vaccinated is especially important this year, because some of the same symptoms can occur in people with either flu or COVID-19, so people with those symptoms might have to be evaluated for both types of infection.
  • Vaccination for influenza will not protect against COVID-19.  When a vaccine for COVID-19 becomes available, follow your healthcare provider’s recommendations for COVID-19 vaccination.
