Traumatic Injury Prevention Program
The Traumatic Injury Prevention Program (TIP) aims to reduce and prevent work-related injury and death, across all industries, due to acute trauma or violence. To do this, we work closely with partners from industry, labor, trade associations, professional organizations, other government agencies, and academia. Our partnerships and research enable us to address the human and economic burden imposed by the leading causes of work-related traumatic injuries, especially among disproportionately affected occupations and workers, including high risk jobs, racial and ethnic minorities, young and older workers, and those in non-standard arrangements, such as temporary workers.
NewA special issue of the Journal of Safety Research featuring select papers from the 2022 National Occupational Injury Research Symposium is available. Open access to this issue is available through February 2024.
National Occupational Injury Research Symposium
The National Occupational Injury Research Symposium (NOIRS) took place virtually on May 10-12, 2022. The theme for NOIRS 2022 was Preventing Workplace Injuries in a Changing World. The NOIRS 2022 Program Agenda Book includes abstracts of presentations given during the symposium. A virtual special issue of the Journal of Safety Research featuring papers presented during NOIRS 2022 will be available in early 2023. Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation
The Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation (FACE) Program | NIOSH | CDC webpage has been updated and reorganized for easier access and includes resources for preventing workplace fatalities from the NIOSH and State FACE programs.
Center for Occupational Robotics Research
With increasing numbers and technologic advances in robotics in the workplace, NIOSH established the Center for Occupational Robotics Research to coordinate research and work to develop best practices for working safely with robots. Through the Center, NIOSH is advancing robotics-related research through a coordinated effort of injury surveillance, identifying risk factors, evaluating interventions, and translating research findings into practice. The blog The Role of Robotics in the Future of Work addresses NIOSH efforts to address future occupational safety and health concerns through the Center.
The Traumatic Injury Prevention Program is committed to the development of practical solutions to address the complex problems that cause traumatic injuries and deaths among workers including falls, on-the-job motor vehicle crashes, workplace violence, and the use of machines and industrial vehicles to perform work duties. The program focuses on identifying and evaluating ways to reduce traumatic injuries among disproportionately affected occupations and workers, such as high risk jobs, racial and ethnic minorities, young and older workers, and those in non-standard work arrangements, such as temporary workers. The program also addresses emerging issues such as robotics and drug overdoses in the workplace.
The Traumatic Injury Prevention Program has selected research priorities on the basis of burden, need, and impact and collaborated with other NIOSH research programs to write research goals included in the NIOSH Strategic Plan for FYs 2019-2026. The priority areas of traumatic injury research include:
- Preventing fatal and nonfatal injuries among high risk workers in the Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing sector including falls, machine-related incidents, and falls overboard fishing vessels
- Preventing fatal and non-fatal injuries among Construction workers, including falls from elevation and on the same level, struck-by incidents, injuries related to emerging technology such as robotics and exoskeletons, and injuries and risk factors for opioid, illicit drugs and substance misuse
- Preventing violence and injury caused by patients among Healthcare and Social Assistance workers
- Preventing injuries related to human-machine interaction among Manufacturing workers
- Preventing injuries among Mining workers such as striking incidents in confined spaces, injuries from high wall failures, fire and explosion associated injuries, the effect of heat strain due to excessive heat exposure, and slips, trips, and falls
- Preventing motor vehicle crashes among Oil and Gas Extraction workers
- Preventing injuries among Public Safety workers such as motor vehicle collisions, workplace violence including assault, and unintentional occupational exposure to illicit drugs
- Reducing falls on the same level and to a lower level among Services workers
- Reducing transportation and machine-related incidents and related injuries among Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities workers
- Preventing injuries due to falls and motor vehicle crashes among workers in the Wholesale and Retail Trades
Program Performance One-Pager (PPOP): The TIP Program Performance One-Pager (PPOP) offers a snapshot of NIOSH programs’ priorities, strategies used to make progress towards priorities, recent accomplishments, and upcoming work.
Impact Sheets: The TIP Impact Sheets briefly describe an occupational safety or health hazard, the specific NIOSH or NIOSH-funded research activity that was conducted to address the hazard, the resulting impact or recommendations, and relevant statistics. The most recent sheets include.

National Occupational Research Agenda Council (NORA)
The TIP Program helps lead the NORA Traumatic Injury Prevention Cross-Sector Council, which brings together individuals and organizations to share information, form partnerships, and promote adoption and dissemination of solutions that work. The council seeks to facilitate the most important research, understand the most effective intervention strategies, and learn how to implement those strategies to achieve sustained improvements in workplace practice. The NORA TIP Research Agenda identifies the knowledge and actions most urgently needed to characterize and prevent occupational injuries and deaths.
