Construction guardrails: development of a multifunctional system.

Fall-related incidents are the primary cause of fatalities in the U.S. construction industry. A NIOSH analysis of fatality data from the Bureau of Labor Statistcis Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) indicated that from 2004 to 2008, a total of 5,844 construction workers were killed from all causes (annual average 1,169) (BLS, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009). During the same period, 2,055 construction fatalities occurred due to falling (annual average 411).
