Potential benefits of waterjet scaling in rapid tunneling systems.

The purpose of this presentation is to discuss potential benefits of waterjetscaling in a modern mechanized drill-and-blast rapid tunneling system. Such a system might include: Precision drilling for accurate hole placement; Smoothwall blasting techniques to minimize wall rock damage; Remote waterjet scaling; and Shotcrete application as part of the ground support system. It is believed that the application of waterjetscaling in an drill-and-blast tunneling cycle would have the following advantages: Improved worker safety compared to existing manual and mechanical scaling techniques; Improved performance of shotcrete applied as a ground support membrane; A reduction in the overall cycle time; and Reduced overall costs.
