Proceedings of the 10th Annual Institute on Coal Mining Health, Safety and Research, Blacksburg, Virginia, August 28-30, 1979. Shaw CT, ed., Blacksburg, VA: Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1979 Aug; :1-8
It does give me a great deal of pleasure to welcome you to this Tenth Annual Institute sponsored by the University, by the Mine, Safety and Health Administration of the Department of Labor, and the Bureau of Mines. I have had the privilege of welcoming the conference for the last ten years and I look forward to it each year. We sponsor approximately 80 or 90 conferences each year across the ten departments that make up the College and I have the privilege of welcoming or participating in perhaps two dozen of those. Some are of one-day duration, some are of three or four days duration. One conference will begin next week in Washington for the Naval Air Systems Command and will last three weeks. But this conference has always been special for a number of reasons. I was asked to welcome the first conference in the summer of 1970 and that was right after I had assumed my present position as Dean of the College of Engineering. So this has become an annual event with me and it indicates I've made it through one more year service as Dean I hesitate to think what might happen if this conference were cancelled, because my tenure is synonymous with it. So Tim, I wish you the best of luck in the continuation of a successful conference, and for many years.
