A cluster of eye cancers occurring among employees of the Dupont Belle, West Virginia plant in the Kanawha River Valley was brought to public attention by a laboratory worker at that plant who suspected that the overall occurrence of cancer among his fellow employees, in particular eye cancer, was excessively high. A report by company epidemiologists on cancer occurrence at that plant reported as well that a statistically significant excess number of cases of eye cancer (all histological types combined) and of kidney cancers had occurred among plant employees.
